Aleksandar Todorovic

Born 1982, Belgrade, Serbia.

Aleksandar Todorovic graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts in Belgrade with a Master degree in Fine Arts. Having exposed to a dramatic collapse of major moral and cultural values, along with the break-up of the Yugoslav republic and the Balkan civil wars years after, the Serbian artist is particularly sensitive about world geopolitics and its effect across the globe. This period proves to be crucial in the formation of the artist’s visual language, as he sees the hierarchy of a religion or a political system as one and the same. They both imply and require worship, of either individuals or ideas. The concept of evil is embodied inside the core of his artistic investigations, its origin and consequenses are attempted to be approached by Todorovic from different perspectives.

Merging with an illustrative, scrupulous and accessible visual style, the artist challenged and overthrown general visual codes of Orthodox tradition, advertising and Western pop culture. His work depicts the essence of traditional medieval Byzantine painting aesthetic and features, with a sense of politically incorrect humour, vivid colours and symbolic texts.
