Born in 1995, Shimada graduated from Tokyo University of the Arts, majoring in Oil Painting, and is currently based in Tokyo.

In Shimada's works, which are based on digitally processed photographs, what first catches the eye are scenes that appear to exhibit "color saturation" and "chromatic aberration" - phenomena now familiar to many through the widespread accessibility of photography and editing tools. While these works evoke the sensation of color saturation, where images appear to "blow out" before our eyes, they are in fact physical objects composed of paint, each with its own inherent color and material presence. This could be considered a new form of Impressionism for our era, where we are more accustomed to viewing landscapes through digital devices than in nature itself, as the artist translates her impressions of everyday light through paint.

The title of her August 2025 solo exhibition at AISHO Tokyo, "Ghost Note," refers to intentionally subtle notes in musical performance that, while typically not explicitly marked in sheet music, play a crucial role in creating a unique atmosphere and groove in the composition. While Shimada often paints similar motifs in variations, she meticulously recreates those digitally manipulated photographs in oil paint, capturing even the finest details of digital noise with remarkable precision, much like the ghost notes in music.

The constant stream of images born in digital devices accumulates in our consciousness, forming a new history. Shimada seeks not to negatively discard the past, but rather to investigate it, deriving new knowledge and perspectives from historical foundations.

島田萌は1995年生まれ、東京藝術大学油画専攻を卒業後、東京を拠点に活動しています。

デジタル加工された写真を元にして描かれた島田の作品の中で最初に目が行くのが、今や誰もが簡単に写真撮影と編集をできるようになったことで見慣れているであろう「色飽和」と「色収差」を起こしているかのような画面です。色飽和、つまり目の前で結ばれている画像の色が飛んでしまった、という現象を思い起こさせますが、実際の作品はそれぞれの固有色を持った物質である絵の具で構成されている、質量を持ったモノなのです。作家が感じた日常の光の印象を絵の具を用いて翻訳してくれている、自然の風景よりもむしろデジタルデバイスの画面を通した景色の方を見慣れている私たちにとっての、新しい印象派であるとも言えるでしょう。

2025年8月のAISHO TOKYOでの個展タイトル「ゴーストノート」とは、音楽を演奏する際に意図的に挿入される極小さな音のことで、たいていが楽譜に明示されないが楽曲に独自の雰囲気やグルーブ感を演出する重要な役割を果たします。島田はモチーフこそ似たものを何枚もバリエーションのように描きますが、それぞれの作品の中で使われている画材や技法を少しづつ変えることで、ゴーストノートを変化させるように作品の纏う雰囲気を進化させていきます。

デジタルデバイスの中で濁流のように産まれ続けるイメージは、私たちの意識の中で積み重なり新たな歴史となります。過去をネガティブなものとして捨て去ることなく、昔のことをたずね求めて、そこから新しい知識・見解を導くことを島田は求めています。
