Influenced by modern and contemporary painting, Sablo Mikawa is recognized for his dramatic oil paintings that explore contemporary subjects, including virtual realities derived from manga and film. The characters he depicts frequently exhibit grotesque effects on their faces and bodies, which serve to highlight distinctive character traits, inner qualities, and silhouettes that diverge from conventional human forms. These stylistic effects draw inspiration from various sources within Western painting, film, music, and manga, which Mikawa deeply admires. They are meticulously sampled and integrated into his works to convey the perceptions and emotional landscapes of the modern era.

サブロ・ミカワは1987年埼玉県生まれ。小学生の間美術教室に通った以降は独学で油彩を続けてきました。サブロの描く人物像は身体が極端に膨張したデフォルメにまず目がいきますが、夕暮れ時のような世界に人物が静かに佇んでいる不思議な存在感も特徴です。登場人物のポーズや持ち物は西洋の古典絵画からのオーマジュに加えて、カンフー映画やスケートボードなどのストリートカルチャーに影響を受けたサブロ自身の内面世界もみて取れます。

サブロの近年描く登場人物たちは皆一様に反射材の施された衣服を身につけ、時には防音イヤーマフ、インパクトドライバーを携えて危険な作業を伴う仕事に従事している様子を示唆します。その中でもシリーズとして描かれている’Fire Man'には特別な思い入れがあり、創作活動の間の心の葛藤、つまり不安や恐怖、焦りやプレッシャーなどの心を焼く炎に対峙する際のポジティブな思考や優しさと行った感情を擬人化したもの、救済のシンボルとして消防士をモチーフとしているとサブロは言います。彼らは自身の日々の糧を得るために働くのと同時に、私たちの生活の基盤を支えてサヴァイヴさせてくれる存在でもあります。

約500年続く油彩の歴史は、描かれた景色風俗はもちろんのこと油彩であるが故に描いた本人の筆跡までをも現代に残します。サブロはその生き物のような油彩の歴史をこれからも紡ぎ続けます。
