Teiji Hayama

Born in 1975 in Kumamoto, Japan. Lives and works in Giffers, Switzerland.

Teiji Hayama graduated from Central Saint Martin, London, UK in 1998. Hayama reimagines celebrity culture by using greyscale oil paintings to depict most iconic celebrities from past eras like Marylyn Monroe, Elisabeth Taylor, or Twiggy—as opposed to wannabes influencers produced by social media. Their glamorous faces and charismatic images are manipulated into peculiar, bored, exhausted expressions from upholding an ideal identity and the endless pursuit of auspiciousness as defined by society. Smothered by a false veil of perfection, these exaggerated facial and body language uncovers the weariness on social media under its domination, as digital contents on social media are becoming more filtered, unblemished, and digitally manipulated.
