Yuichi Yokoyama

Yuichi Yokoyama, born in 1967 in Miyazaki, Japan. Lives and works in Kanagawa.

Yuichi Yokoyama had produced Fine Art works in 1990’s after he finished his B.F.A at Musashino Art University with a major in oil painting. He has been actively engaged as a manga artist since 1995. In addition to his contributions to manga, Yokoyama's vibrant paintings and drawings have cultivated a substantial following and have received acclaim within the art community. His works have been featured in notable exhibitions, including "Record of Neo-Manga by Yuichi Yokoyama: I Am Drawing Time" at the Kawasaki City Museum (2010), "City Net Asia" at the Seoul Museum of Art (2009), and "Roppongi Crossing" at the Mori Art Museum (2007). Yokoyama's multifaceted talent transcends the boundaries of contemporary comics and the art scene, earning him international recognition.

"Whatever theme or motif I select, what I am drawing is not the physical thing in the picture but rather the particular sort of time that exists there."

The key themes that prominently feature in Yokoyama's body of work include time, process, and passage. A notable characteristic of his creations is the expression of the steady, rhythmic flow of time. The enigmatic and fantastical landscapes he constructs are essential to comprehending Yokoyama's artistic vision. Having experienced a nomadic childhood, he was exposed to a variety of environments, which profoundly influenced his perspective. As Yokoyama articulates, "I am mesmerized by landscapes and nature. The man-made world is so easily destroyed and is fraught with uncertainty; in contrast, the natural world is enduring, even divine. In the presence of such a monumental force, humans appear diminutive; all we can do is observe." This profound reverence for nature is vividly reflected in his imagery, the landscapes he depicts, the narratives he weaves, and the characters he develops, all of which convey a persistent tension and a deep respect for the natural world.”
