"We can't know everything,

but we can know as much as we pursuit."

Created 2014

Masaki Sato was born in Iwate Prefecture in 1980. He pursued artistic expression through self-study without attending any art school or other institution, and is currently based in Tokyo. His first Instagram post was in 2015, but he has been drawing and interpreting " That Shape (ある形)" in various ways, almost like a diary, since before that.

Created 2017

Sato uses a wide variety of materials in his works, including not only paint on canvas, but also materials including white Gesso, flowers found on a random path, tiles, pieces of wood, wire and more. It is noteworthy how carefully he handles each material. The combination of colors and different materials, and even the way he applies paint, all seem to be attentively and thoughtfully executed.

Contrary to the eloquence of the material, the artist explains himself in extremely simple wordings. The title of this article, ""We can't know everything, but we can know as much as we pursuit," succinctly expresses Sato's belief. Using "That Shape," a peculiar quadrangle that is neither a trapezoid nor a parallelogram and that has no specific meaning or value, Sato produces almost infinite variations of thought.

Sato's work solidifies the fragmented and sometimes hollowed-out concepts of Formalism, Neo-Geo, Mono-ha, and Gutai, and will continue to expand with its infinite variations, creating a new universe every day.

I cannot help but think that this is the fundamental power of art.
